ON SITE ASSESSMENT & TRAINING (OSAT)
The construction industry is moving towards a fully trained, fully qualified workforce. A workforce with the necessary skills and qualifications delivers higher quality, more cost-efficient work.
The improved teamwork and increased awareness of health and safety also means earlier completion dates, less time wasted correcting mistakes and fewer accidents.
Roofing operatives benefit too. Being trained to nationally recognised qualifications such as an NVQ shows employers they have the necessary skills to do the job, and, combined with an up to date health and safety test, they can obtain a CSCS card.
More and more roofing companies and their clients are demanding that roofing operatives on their sites prove their competence with card scheme membership.
You may already have a highly experienced workforce who you trust and rely on to get the job done, but often, these workers don't have the qualifications to get the CSCS card they will need to get access to the site in future.
THIS IS WHY OSAT HAS BEEN CREATED.
There are 2 major OSAT providers in the NW Region:
ARM TRAINING SERVICES, Stockport
PRESTON COLLEGE, Preston
Sometimes, special grants are available to assist.
Contact us for more details.
The main purpose of CSCS is to help workers prove they are competent to do the job. It also helps to improve safety on site by raising health and safety standards and encouragiong companies to use skilled operatives who know what they are doing, as they have to pass the Constrction Skills Health and Safety test to qualify for a CSCS card.
Many local Councils and certainly, the Major Contractors Group are demanding proof of competence before allowing workers on to their sites.
Some of the benefits of the Scheme are as follows:
It helps operatives get on to more sites
It is an easy way for operatives to prove their skills
It raises the general quality of workmanship on site
It improves health and safety awarenss across the industry
NOT HAVING A CSCS CARD COULD SERIOUSLY HARM YOUR CAREER AND/OR YOUR BUSINESS

The objective of the industry is to recruit and train young people into the roofing industry and provide them with the foundation for an exciting, rewarding and successful career.
College Courses are based on a programme combining site work spent with a roofing company, training at the college and ongoing assessment.
Apprenticeships allow youngemployees to learn, work and get qualified all at the same time. It's a simple step by step processwhere colleges can guide both apprentices and employers.
Currently, in the North West, the apprenticeship training programme is offered in Roof Slating and Tiling in the purpose-built Roofing Centre at Bolton Community College. (Please see section CRAFT TRAINING FOR MORE DETAILS OF BOLTON COLLEGE) Training in other roofing disciplines can be offered outside the Region.
